LASER VISION CORRECTION
DIOPTER CORRECTION WITH PHAKIC LENSES
BLEPHAROPLASTY – EYELID REJUVENATION
AGE-RELATED DIOPTER CORRECTION
Laser vision correction has been practiced in the world for over 30 years with more than fifty million people who have undergone this treatment. There are a number of methods of laser vision correction nowadays and the basic division depends on the depth of the cornea at which the operation is done (surface of cornea – PRK, middle of the cornea – LASIK).
All types of current surgeries are fully computer-controlled with the help of precise software programs integrated in laser platforms. The current devices are able to reduce one diopter in less than 2 seconds, while the systems for tracking the patient’s eye during the surgery (“trackers”) enable precise delivery of laser beams exactly to the given spot regardless of the eye movement. Thanks to the perfectly precise and fast software systems, all the operations are nowadays over 99% safe.
WHICH METHOD IS USED DURING LASER OPERATION?
The selection of the method depends solely on the eye characteristics, the size of the diopter and the patient’s lifestyle. As a rule, today’s lasers are able to correct the diopters ranging from -10 to +6, as well as 6diopter of astigmatism, which means that practically 95% of persons are candidates for operation. With patients with higher diopters, the method of implanting phakic intraocular lenses has developed, the results of which are as good as those of laser operations (for persons with high diopters frequently even better because the lenses improve the image quality).
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LASER OPERATION?
Laser vision correction is recommended to persons older than 18 years whose diopter has been stable for at least one year (i.e. the change of the diopter has not been more than 0.50). The upper age limit of laser vision correction is somewhat more flexible, so that the surgery may be undertaken unless the persons develop the cataract (opacity in the natural lens).
Then the proportion of cornea thickness and the size of the diopter to be corrected is very important, as well as to make sure that after the intervention the cornea is not too thin. Laser vision correction is not applied with the persons younger than 18, i.e. until the growth and development of the organism, and hence of the eye, or with the pregnant women and during lactation due to the changed hormonal status of organism. WHICH ARE THE RESULTS OF LASER VISION CORRECTION?
Permanent removal of diopter with the patients is the result of laser vision correction, which is confirmed with over 5000 laser vision correction surgeries successfully implemented at the Svjetlost Clinic in Banja Luka. After the laser surgery, the patient does not need to wear the glasses or contact lenses any more. In case of changes in diopter, the operation can in most cases be repeated.
WHAT IS A PRE-OPERATIVE EXAMINATION FOR LASIK?
Before the laser operation, all patients undergo a detailed ophthalmological examination. In this pre-operative checkup the depth of the cornea should be established, the eye pressure measured and the eye bottom checked. If the results of the analysis prove to be satisfactory, the patient becomes a candidate for laser vision correction. The medical findings of this examination are valid for 6 months.
