BLEPHAROPLASTY – EYELID REJUVENATION
AGE-RELATED DIOPTER CORRECTION
The most common surgical operation on eyelids that restores their freshness and juvenile look is referred to as blepharoplasty. Esthetic blepharoplasty is performed in cases of extra skin on eyelids (dermatochalasis), which most frequently occurs due to ageing, because the skin has lost its elasticity and droops over the eyelids.
This condition may be associated with fat tissue prolapse from the orbit which causes creation of fat pads and bags under the eyes. Functional blepharoplasty is also done in the cases where, apart from excess skin, muscles are also weakened, so the eyelids droop and are unable to restore to their original position (ptosis).
Excess skin, fat tissue and stretched muscle fibres are removed from eyelids in a surgery under local anesthesia. The incision is done in natural eyelid wrinkles or under the eye lashes and is closed with stitches that are removed after 7 days, with fast recovery and practically an invisible scar.
Ptosis is a medical term for drooping eyelids, which, besides being an esthetic problem, can also cause functional vision problems if they affect one vision axis. It can be present at childbirth already so it is referred to as congenital. On the other hand, the acquired ptosis is developed as a consequence of an injury or degenerative changes on muscles or eyelid tendons caused by ageing.
A choice of the surgical procedure depends on the type and the degree of ptosis. The surgery is performed in topical anesthesia with very quick recovery of the patient.
Due to the changes in the structure of eyelid edges caused by ageing, scars, injuries or innervation disorders, the edge of the eyelids with eyelashes turn outside (ectropion), so the eye cannot close, tears drop over the eyelid edges, and the cornea and the anterior eye segment are dried.
The edge of the eyelids can also turn inward (entropion), when eyelashes create wounds on the cornea and the patient comes to the doctor’s office with pain.
With an operation in topical anesthesia, the eyelid edge is strengthened and placed into an appropriate position, or new muscles are formed to restore the proper form and function of the eyelid.
